ZDNet publishes an article entitled “A Brief History of Cyberspace” in which author Mark Pesce writes, “There are two ages of the Internet – before Mosaic, and after. The combination of Tim Berners-Lee’s Web protocols, which provided connectivity, and Marc Andreesen’s browser, which provided a great interface, proved explosive. In twenty-four months, the Web has gone from being unknown to absolutely ubiquitous.”

On the Official Google Blog, YouTube product manager David King announces the release of YouTube Video Identification, a tool to help copyright holders identify works being shared on YouTube and choose what they want done with them that would go “above and beyond our legal responsibilities.” While the tool goes a long way towards easing Google’s legal issues in regard to the site, the automated tool will come under heavy criticism in January 2009 after Warner Music Group uses it to remove massive numbers of videos whose use should have fallen under Fair Use. Finland becomes the first country in the world to declare Internet broadband access a legal right with the introduction of legislation that will require telecommunication providers across the country to provide all 5.2 million citizens with an Internet connection of at least one megabit per second effective July 1st with a goal of reaching universal speeds of up to one hundred megabits per second by 2015. The move comes just months after France’s highest court, the Constitutional Council, struck down the nation’s controversial “three strikes” anti-piracy law, ruling that “The internet is a fundamental human right that cannot be taken away by anything other than a court of law, only when guilt has been established there.” Laura Vilkkonen, the legislative counselor for the Ministry of Transport and Communications, tells the press “We think it’s something you cannot live without in modern society. Like banking services or water or electricity, you need Internet connection.”
Google announces that it will launch a new online service for booksellers next year called Google Editions, which will let readers buy books and read them on mobile devices.
