In a nation crazy for cars, Wang is intent on topping the world record mark of 7,572 feet for longest vehicle drift, or sideways driving, according to Guinness, the Britain-based authority on record-breaking.

"Many Chinese now want to do new things, like breaking records. It's an honor for me just to try," says Wang, 29.

For their country, for their city, and sometimes just for themselves, more and more Chinese are chasing targets weird and wonderful with the same enthusiasm Americans have shown ever since the Guinness Book of World Records first appeared in the 1950s.

The United States remains the world beater, with 5,187 records. But a boom in applications will see China speed up the rankings from its current seventh spot, with 454 records, predicts Rowan Simons, president, Greater China, for Guinness World Records.

"It's just amazing what people do," says Dong Cheng, one of two Guinness adjudicators in China who, for a fee, attend record attempts for immediate verification.

Breaking the record for tightest parallel parking, Zhang Hua expertly slid his QQ car into a space just 9.4 inches longer than his car. "He's brought the record into Chinese hands!" presenter Lin Hai exclaimed.
