1996年IEEE—CS授予一批前苏联和东欧国家的学者以计算机先驱奖的名单中,我们发现没有白俄罗斯的科学家。在前苏联,白俄罗斯是除俄罗斯外,计算机的研发和生产能力最强的加盟共和国,它所生产的“明斯克”系列计算机曾经占到前苏联全境计算机总数的70%。因此,没有白俄罗斯科学家获奖是令人遗憾的。2000年的计算机先驱奖名单中包括两位白俄罗斯学者,终于弥补了这一缺陷。我们先介绍明斯克计算机的总设计师格奥尔基·洛帕托(Georgy P.Lopato)。
洛帕托生于1924年8月23日。青少年时期的情况不详。他原是前苏联的另一位计算机先驱勃鲁克(1saak Semyonovich Bruk)领导下的计算机研制小组的成员,先后参与了M—1、M—2计算机的研制工作。待到开发这个系列计算机的新型号M—3的时候,洛帕托已经接替勃鲁克担任总设计师。M—3是一台小型的串行定点计算机,配有一个立式磁鼓,运算速度为每秒30条指令,以八进制符号编程。我国第一代计算机工作者对它是很熟悉的,因为我国在启动计算机计划的时候,遵循“先易后难、循序渐进”的原则,首先上马的“103"项目就是仿制自M—3,于1958年完成,然后的“104"项目才仿制前苏联的大型机BESM,于1959年完成。
鉴于洛帕托在领导M—3研制中的出色表现和M—3计算机的成功,1959年在明斯克的奥尔忠尼启则工厂建立特种设计局SKB以促进计算机的更新换代和实现“科研和生产相结合”的时候,洛帕托和其他一批优秀的工程技术人员被从全苏各地调入SKB,洛帕托被任命为SKB的总工程师。作为练兵,工厂在1959年9月首先生产出了一台M—3。第二年,用磁心存储器代替了磁鼓,容量为1 024个31 bit的字;使机器的运算速度提高到每秒1 000条指令。到1960年底,以磁鼓或磁心作存储器的M—3共生产出了26台。
与此同时,洛帕托领导研制组进行着新的计算机的设计与试制。1960年8月,被命名为Minsk—1的新机器问世,除了字长31bit以及二地址指令格式与M—3一样外,其他方面Minsk—1与M—3是不兼容的。Minsk—1全部采用磁心存储器,还配有穿孔纸带机、磁带机、打印机等较齐全的外部设备。问世之初,它还没有配备高级语言,但有一个标准子程序库,包含约100个程序,共7 500条指令。以后陆续研制出了第一批自动化程序设计系统。如ECONOMIST Au—tocoder和编译器ENGINEER。其主要开发人员是根那蒂·斯托里阿洛夫(Gennady Stolyarov,他和洛帕托同时获得计算机先驱奖,我们将在后面介绍他)。这使Minsk—1成为当时苏联最强大的计算机之一,从1960年到1964年,共生产了220台,无论从质量上还是数量上都不逊色于西方发达国家。
在Minsk—1的基础上,SKB后来陆续推出了Minsk—11、Minsk—12、Minsk—14、Minsk—2、Minsk—22、Minsk—23、Minsk—26、Minsk—27、Minsk—32等多个型号组成系列机。其中,1962年9月问世的Minsk—2开始采用晶体管线路,使时钟频率达到250kHz。由于它所使用的晶体管P—16A是国产的,很便宜,因此机器售价仅10万卢布。Minsk—2的磁心存储器采用外径为1.4mm的小型磁心,存取周期为20μs,功耗仅800 W,其性能指标在当时世界上都是领先的。Minsk—2也是最早采用硬件—软件中断的明斯克计算机,并配备了FORTRAN和ALGOL编译器。到1964年底,Minsk—2共生产了118台。而整个Minsk系列计算机的生产数量截至20世纪60年代末超过4000台,在全苏联境内获得广泛使用,并出口到17个国家,Minsk的研制组因而于1970年荣获全苏联的国家奖,洛帕托是主要获奖者之一。
