辛普森:基于时间性的技术批判

        Lorenzo C. Simpson, Technology, Time, and the Conversations of Modernity(New York and London: Routledge, 1995)

        Lorenzo C. Simpson, The Unfinished Project: Toward a Postmetaphysical Humanism(New York and London: Routledge, 2001)

    我们的文化是一种已经几乎被技术完全浸渗了的文化。例如,我们的家庭用餐越来越多地被微波炉食品或快餐所替代。我们的交谈与会话越来越多地被电话应答机、手机或E-mail上的纯粹的功能信息所替代。还有,我们可能会焦噪不安地在我们的电脑边等待它完成我们的工作,而不会去想到它们的微处理器的功能有多么强大。如此等等,都从根本上反映了在我们的技术时代里所盛行的思维方式是一种目的指向的思维方式。应该说,有大量的文献探讨了这种目的指向的思维方式,并以此出发而形成了技术批判的各种进路(approach)。但对于洛伦佐·辛普森(Lorenzo C. Simpson)来说,所有这些研究似乎都没有对技术中的时间性这一主题予以足够的关注。或者即使有所关注,也只是把技术压缩时间与空间的能力,从工具论意义上视其为一种减少在需要的主体与满足需要的对象之间的“距离”的能力。然而,辛普森认为,技术的压缩时间的能力,对于我们的主体性而言,不仅是工具性的,而且也是构造性的:技术的时间压缩对于我们怎样经验我们的主体性,以及对于我们如何理解作为主体的自身具有极其深刻的意义。正是从这一基本的认知出发,辛普森为当代技术争论提供了一条基于时间性的独特的技术批判进程。

    辛普森是一位活跃在当代美国知识界的知名哲学家,属于大陆哲学,尤其是社会批判理论、现象学与解释学的传统。他有两本重要的著作:《技术、时间与现代性的会话(Technology, Time, and the Conversations of Modernity)》和《未完成的筹划:走向后形而上学的人文主义(The Unfinished Project: Toward a Postmetaphysical Humanism)》。按照辛普森自已的说法,《技术、时间与现代性的会话》第一本书是通过将技术合理性(technological rationality)的批判-解释学分析与现代性与后现代性的一些当代重要的话语相关连,寻求建立起技术合理性与我们的时间经验之间的内在联系,并考察这一联系对于我们理解批判性地从事有意义的实践的可能性的意义。第二本书是可以说是第一本书的进一步延伸,其目的是发展出一种文化多元主义,或者更确切地说是一种非相对主义,但却是解释学的批判合理性(critical rationality)的版本。他试图在修订人文主义的传统质询方式的基础上来完成这一任务,也因此在这样做时,致力于一种阐发一种所谓的“后形而上学的人文主义”。

    无疑,辛普森的思想涉及到包括哲学在内的庞大思想领域,但其基本指向却是技术与现代性现象,其基础与核心就是他的基于时间性的技术批判。辛普森的基于时间性的技术批判主要出现在《技术、时间与现代性的会话》一书中,他认为,他的技术批判“涉及到三个互相关连的筹划(project)”:

    ——对现代性中的技术与科学的生活世界作出现象学的说明;

    ——表明技术世界观是与另一些行为来源不匹配的,但它们也是我们生活世界(交往、友谊、爱情、养育等)的组成部分,具有一种能够提供我们借以批判技术的概念性和道德性资源的意义与重要性。

     ——发展一种技术的文化与哲学的批判的合理基础。

     在对他的技术批判的筹划中,辛普森根据人类的时间意识、有限性,以及超越人类条件的限制的需要,而将其置根于形而上学的与境(context)中。对于辛普森来说,技术可以使我们这些有限性的人类活得更好,更加具有支配性与控制性的,因而也是更加类神的。但是,现在的技术统治与超越却是一个失败的筹划,它产生了一种将个人从他们的文化与传统脱离开来的幻觉与无根性,产生一种对自我与世界的错误的理解。他希望发展一种批判的观点,它能够阐明技术(与现代性)现象,使我们能够反思在生活在一个技术时代的代价与利益,意识到它同时既是我们的器具也是我们的主人,既是我们的工具也是我们的命运。更进一步,它能够发展一种让我们摆脱现代技术所导致的世界观的限制的替代性世界观。
