Shawn Fanning and Sean Parker, bothNortheastern University students, first release the Napster filesharing service. The services proves a simple interface through which users can easily copy and distribute MP3 files. On December 7, 1999, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) will file a lawsuit against the service, alleging mass copyright infringement, however, the case will lead to a great deal of publicity for Napster, resulting in millions of new users. Though filesharing had long been popular through Hotline, IRC, and USENET, Napster will become the first massively popular peer-to-peer file distribution system. In February 2001, Napster will reach a peak of 26.4 million verified users worldwide. On June 3, 2002, Napster will file for Chapter 11protection under United States bankruptcy laws. On September 3, 2002, a bankruptcy judge will force Napster to liquidate its assets under Chapter 7 proceedings.

2009
Microsoft launches a preview version of its Bingsearch engine, a re-vamped version of its Live Search. Microsoft markets the search engine as a “decision engine,” a service designed to assist consumer with comparinggoods and services. Chief among its new features are search suggestions pointingusers towards related search terms returned inline in each set of search results. Prior to Bing, Microsoft’s marketshare of internet searches was nominal, but by 2011, Bing will have a 12.8% marketshare, largely at the expense of Yahoo’s marketshare.
